Differences between API 5L 45th edition and the previous edition
The main difference between the 45th Edition and the previous is adding additional appendixes: European onshore pipeline for PSL2 pipe order specification (Annex M). And Equations for threaded and coupled pipe and background equations for guided bend and CVN test specimens (Annex P). As for the other content, they only have a slight difference in related standards, manufacturing technology, performance norms, and inspection methods, besides adjustment of text expression. The latest version of API 5L 2012 is complete and more scientific.
API 5L Pipe Standard Scope: API SPEC 5L 46th Edition is: “Requirements for manufacturing two product specification levels (PSL1 and PSL2) of seamless and welded steel pipes for use in pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries. This standard does not apply to cast pipe.”
To summarize, API 5L pipe is the carbon steel pipe applied to the oil and gas transmission system. Meanwhile, other fluids such as steam, water, and slurry can also adopt the API 5L standard for transmission.
Different Manufacturing Types
API 5L specification covers the manufacturing types in welded and seamless.
Welded Type: ERW, SAW, DSAW, LSAW, SSAW, HSAW Pipe
The API 5L welded pipe common types are as follows:
ERW: Electric Resistance Welded, for pipe diameter normally under 24 inches.
DSAW/SAW: Double Submerged Arc Welding / Submerged Arc Welding, a substitute welding method of ERW for larger diameter pipes.
LSAW: Longitudinal SAW, for diameter up to 48 inches. She also called the JCOE manufacturing process.
SSAW/HSAW: Spiral Submerged Arc Welded / Helical SAW, pipe diameters up to 100 inches.
What is API 5L X65 pipe means?
API 5L X65 pipe is a grade of carbon steel pipe covered by API specification 5L. The “X65” in the API 5L X65 specification refers to the minimum yield strength of the pipe, which is 65,000 psi (448 MPa). This grade of pipe is generally used to transport oil, natural gas, and other liquids in pipelines.
What is the difference between API 5L X52 and X65 pipe?
The carbon content is the main difference between API 5L X52 and X65 pipe. API 5L X52 has a carbon content of 0.52%, while API 5L X65 pipe has a carbon content of 0.65%.
Other differences include the minimum impact toughness and the minimum yield strength. The minimum impact toughness for API 5L X52 is 27 Joules/cm2, while the minimum impact toughness for API 5L X65 is 36 Joules/cm2. The minimum yield strength for API 5L X52 is 360 MPa, while the minimum yield strength for API 5L X65 pipe is 440 MPa.

Hydrostatic test
Pipe to withstand a hydrostatic test without leakage through the weld seam or the pipe body. Jointers need not be hydrostatic tested provide the pipe sections used were successfully tested.
Bend test
No cracks shall occur in any portion of the test piece and no opening of the weld shall occur.
Flattening test
Acceptance criteria for flattening test shall be:
- EW pipes D<12.750 in:
- X60 with T 500in. There shall be no opening of the weld before the distance between the plates is less than 66% of the original outside diameter. For all grades and wall, 50%.
- For pipe with a D/t > 10, there shall be no opening of the weld before the distance between the plates is less than 30% of the original outside diameter.
- For other sizes refer to the full API 5L specification.
